Liberalism And Conservatism Essays - Political Ideologies

Progressivism And Conservatism Barry Whiteside Educator Whiteclay English 101 ? 6:30 3 October 2000 Progressivism and Conservatism Progressivism and conservatism have been political thoughts and considerations from the very birth of our majority rules system. Their perspectives and purposes of the administration's job in a popularity based society have changed throughout the years, yet the fundamental thoughts and standards have continued as before. There are a wide range of degrees of progressivism and conservatism as nearly anybody can be named. A few people are radical and outrageous while others remain on all the more an impartial domain, however the discussions between the comprehended thoughts of each gathering have proceeded since the commencement of the United States. We will take progressivism's Gary Doore and conservatism's Irving Kristol as cutting edge models and thoroughly analyze the political perspectives of every person. Conservatism is contained religion, patriotism, and monetary development. Among these, Irving Kristol accepts religion is generally significant (18). Why? Clearly, religion doesn't instruct individuals to foul up. Actually, as the vast majority of us know, religion harshly ingrains great qualities and ethics in an individual at an early age. These thoughts are what tell individuals directly from off-base, great from awful. Religion inspires individuals to prevail in life not in materialistic perspectives, yet in honest, conscious viewpoints. Regard for God, life and other people. So in what manner would this be able to be awful for a general public? It can't and that is the reason moderates think it is generally significant in the capacity of an administration (18-19) On the off chance that America could satisfy the strict norm, wrongdoing would be nonexistent. Obviously, this is unthinkable, however the thought drives moderate masterminds. Kristol brings up that ongoing liberal endeavors to back off and decline the crime percentage have not worked (20). Moreover with every liberal program's disappointment, an ever increasing number of American individuals dishonor and doubt the legislature. Generally speaking, the basic preservationist agreement is that strict standards ought to supplant huge systematic government and the going through that accompanies it. (20-21) Freedom, rights, equity and balance are goals radicals, for example, Gary Doore see as the most significant viewpoints in the vote based system of America (24). They likewise feel America has as of late drawn away from these goals and is subsequently not as popularity based as it used to be or can be later on. Doore accepts there is particularly space for democratization in the work environment (28). Actually, he brings up that it is the absence of opportunity of articulation and the prohibitive condition of the working environment that has prompted this circumstance. More thoughts and advancements would originate from organizations on the off chance that they would permit more opportunity to its representatives. In addition to the fact that laborers would profit, yet the organization they work for would likewise. (28) Another reason for the separate of popular government in America comes from the organizations of Ronald Reagan and George Bush (Doore 26). Due to the Cold War period and the uncertainties it brought to the American individuals, the organizations thought it was important to fix down and take control. To do this they called for additional forces to the official branch. Accordingly, Doore and different dissidents started to see a greater amount of a tyrant government come to fruition, and the term ?supreme administration? was made. The circumstances went similar to restricting papers and magazines from Cuba, North Vietnam, and Albania (27). These cutoff points, just as the prohibitive condition of the work environment are what dissidents feel are generally answerable for the rot of vote based system that has occurred in the course of recent decades. Both Doore and Kristol raise fascinating contentions, however they go excessively far. Kristol rushed to call attention to that liberal projects have not hindered the crime percentage by any stretch of the imagination, however the ongoing endeavors by Clinton and his liberal projects have done quite recently that, so their numbers guarantee. What's more, what about the shortage? Additionally, an enormous turnaround. Who or what is liable for that however? Clinton certainly assumes acknowledgment for more than he merits. Doore states that the organizations of Reagan and Bush made to some degree a tyrant government. It went excessively far, yet a portion of the moves they made were important to control the frailties the Cold War delivered. It likewise helped in consummation that period. When Doore

In praise of multiple choice tests

I have to say I never thought Id write a post singing the virtues of multiple choice tests (well, sort of). Despite the fact that much of my professional life is dictated by such exams, Ive never had any overwhelming liking for them. Rather, Ive generally seen them as a necessary evil, a crudely pragmatic way of assessing fundamental skills on a very large scale. Sure, the logic and elimination aspects are interesting, but theyve always in comparison to the difficulty of, say, teaching a student to write out a close reading of a passage in their own words. People might argue that learning to do so in irrelevant (obviously I disagree, but Im not going into that here), but basically no one is disputing that its hard. At any rate, Ive always assumed that given the alternative between an essay-based test and a multiple-choice one, the former would invariably be superior. By this point, you think Id have taken a lesson from the SAT and learned not to think in such extreme terms, but from time to time I apparently still fall prey to that kind of thinking. A couple of weeks ago, however, I had a conversation that made me reconsider that assumption. Not toss it out the window, mind you, but look at it in a slightly more nuanced  manner. It all started when a friend who teaches high school French invited me for dinner. When I arrived, she was in the process of grading a batch of tests shed given her AP students, and she was becoming increasingly concerned. Shed asked them to write a short essay comparing the main themes of two short stories a perfectly straightforward assignment, shed thought but virtually none of the students had actually written statements directly comparing the articles. Instead, theyd simply written every piece of information they knew about the stories, never indicating how it answered the question. My friend was really and truly shocked. It was not a notably difficult task shed given them, and theyd discussed the stories in class. But out of a class of over 20 students, only two had made general statements directly comparing the stories. So now my friend had a dilemma: her students had not actually completed the assignment correctly, but they had written something. If she docked a lot of points, she would have to deal with a gaggle of hysterical sixteen year-olds and their more hysterical parents (one of whom had recently sent her a very lengthy email begging her to raise her daughters grade to an A- simply because she loved French so much), all insisting that it was unfair of her to have taken the points off because the students had written a lot. And if she gave out too many low grades, shed end up shouldering the blame for not having taught them properly. (Shed had a 100% AP pass rate for the last two years, a statistic that included kids who shouldnt have been taking AP but whom shed been forced to let in anyway; her ability to teach wasnt in question.) But on the other hand, 95% of her students hadnt actually demonstrated mastery of the task at hand. They didnt deserve to be rewarded for something they hadnt accomplished. In the end, she compromised and took off half the number of points shed originally wanted to take off. It was an entirely reasonable decision, but it also left her with a bad taste in her mouth. The real problem, of course, was that her students didnt seem to know how present arguments in terms of main ideas at least not in French. But she had so much content she needed to cover before the AP exam that she couldnt afford to lose even part of a class, never mind a few days or a week, just to try to remedy the issue. There was also the deeper issue that her students had apparently been conditioned to believe that if they wrote something, anything, it would be good enough, and that they could at least argue for partial credit. You know, my friend said over dinner, theres really something to be said for multiple choice tests. For all their shortcomings, they really lay it on the line you either know it or you dont. And that got me thinking. I agreed with my friend Id written as much in who knows how many blog posts but somehow watching her worry put things in a new light. The way things stood, she didnt actually know how much her students understood about the relationship between the stories themes. It could have been a language problem, although that seemed unlikely; some of them had managed to write plenty otherwise. It could have been that theyd never learned to write general statements period. It could be that they had learned to do so in English class but that it didnt occur to them to do so in French. It could be that they understood the relationship between the stories but didnt see the necessity of spelling it out because they thought that all of those details were sufficient to get the point across. That last part wouldnt have surprised me in the least. One of hardest things about teaching writing is conveying just how explicit one must be in order for the reader to follow the writers thoughts. Mastering that skill requires an extremely high level of metacognition writers must essentially set aside their knowledge of a subject and place themselves in the readers shoes, asking themselves objectively whether what theyve written makes sense. Thats a challenge for a lot of adult writers, never mind sixteen year-old ones. But difficulty expressing ones ideas in writing does not always translate into the inability to identify those ideas in someone elses writing. Ive worked with kids who simply couldnt put answers in their own words but could immediately and unwaveringly identify correct answers when they saw them. They knew the idea they were trying to convey, but they just didnt yet have the vocabulary or the verbal acumen to get it across in so many words themselves. For students in this category, multiple choice tests can be a very useful vehicle for showing what they know. Less generously, of course, multiple choice tests can be an extremely useful tool for eliminating the bullshit factor and for determining just what students actually understand. To be clear: given the option between demanding, rigorously graded essay exams and multiple choice tests, I clearly come down in favor of the former. The problem, however, is the rigorously graded part. If teachers are pressured (by the administration, by parents, implicitly by college admissions officers) to reward any an indication effort, even when it seriously calls into question the students actual mastery of the task at hand, then essay tests can actually be less rigorous than well-designed multiple choice tests. To be sure, multiple choice tests are not a panacea, but properly used, they can offer a revealing assessment. At best, they make it next to impossible for students to consistently choose correct answers without having mastered particular concepts. The real issue is what teachers can do with feedback such tests provide. If the curricular constraints are such that they cant address the underlying problems Well, Im honestly not sure what to say to that.

Nineteen Eighty Four Fiction Essay Example For Students

Nineteen Eighty Four Fiction Essay Nineteen Eighty Four Fictional WorldIn English this semester we have studied three different texts. All three texts were based on original, fictional worlds. The fictional world which stood out above the rest and really amazed me would have to be Nineteen Eighty-Four. Nineteen Eighty-Four was the most realistic out of the three. While reading the novel you really get into the fictional world and think like the main character Winston Smith. Three aspects of the text which made this world so interesting to study were The Inner Party, Big Brother, and the Thought Police. Each of these interesting aspects in Nineteen Eighty Four play a great part in the novel itself and the way the fictional world works. The Inner Party played a huge role in creating the fascinating world in Nineteen Eighty Four. The Inner Party was in charge of Airstrip1 and wanted to be superior over everyone. They wanted the party to be the peoples first loyalty over anything else. They didnt allow marriage or even sex for this was an act of loyalty between two people and not to the party. An example of this is when Winston and Julia were caught having a sexual relationship and were taken away by the Thought Police. They were then made to betray eachother, love the Party, and to believe what ever the party said was true. The Party had control over everything even peoples minds. This was proved when O Brien held up four fingers and said to Winston how many fingers am I holding up? Winston replied Five. Big Brother also played a big role in creating the world which Nineteen Eighty-Four was based in. Big Brother is a figure, which the Party has created to frighten people and give them more power. The Party can do anything they like and when someone questions them they can just say there under orders from Big Brother. Big Brother is everywhere in every house (except proles), every street, wall, and he is always shouting out BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU the text which backs this up is when Winston describes that On each landing, opposite the lift shaft the poster with enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures, which are so conceived that the eyes follow you about when you move. Big Brother is so important to the world in the novel because the figure stops thought crime, gives the people someone to look up to and someone to love, lets the Party tell the people anything they want and the people will believe it, such as propaganda. An example is when the party say Oce ania is at war with Eurasia, Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia. The people automatically believe this. Newspeak is the official language of Oceania. It is supposed to take over common English in the year 2050. Newspeak is another important aspect in the creation of Oceania because it prevents Thought Crime. The purpose of Newspeak is to cancel out words such as rebel so that people wont know the word and therefore if they feel like rebelling against the party they wont know how to express their feelings. The compiler of the Newspeak dictionary Syme says Dont you see that the whole aim of newspeak is to narrow the range of thoughts which in the end we shall make thought crime literally impossible. Newspeak will also cut out words that have no use such as excellent or superb which are all different meanings of the word good, or double plus good instead of having all different words meaning the same thing. Syme said to Winston were cutting the language down to the bone. He then said, the purpose of the Newspeak Dictionary is to reduce the vocabulary so that even the concept of rebellion fades awayThe Inner Party, Big Brother, and Newspeak are all-important aspects of the fictional world in Nineteen Eighty-Four each one of these aspects play an important part in the development of the fascinating world which the author George Orwell has created.

Social Justice Research Questions

Social Justice Research QuestionsSocial justice research is a complex process of both human evaluation and economic cost/benefit analysis. The professional survey program usually works with people who are experienced in social issues and social justice. They have the advantage of dealing with a variety of issues and social issues so that their time is spread out more evenly and they have many different areas to work on.After completing a survey program, there is usually a follow up call to discuss the results and talk about what they found. This is a great way to learn about what really happens in society. In this call, the participants can share what they found out and what they plan to do next. The most common way to tackle social issues is to get people to write down what they think the problem is. Then they compare those notes with what people will agree upon and then they figure out how many people will need to be consulted. Some professional survey programs may ask questions per taining to what groups of people or organizations need to be consulted. Some organizations take the time to ask, what is the problem? For example, if the city or town is complaining about a few people ruining the sidewalk, then ask the question, how many people are going to need to be consulted? If the city/town is just asking for money, then ask them what type of funds and if they want to have an organization that does not necessarily give out grants to go through a grant process. Most of the times, a professional survey program will require a lot of the written information. They will ask questions like; what was the problem and who caused it? This will give them the problem to analyze so that they can fix the problem. Also, when people go into a consultation, they are trying to find out what others think. Most people start by giving a solution or a conclusion. This gives them the chance to get the opinions and information but without actually spending any money or taking out time.Ano ther common reason for consulting is that some people believe that they are in a better position to figure out what to do than another person. This is usually the case because people are generally more skilled at something than someone else. For example, if you need someone to walk you across the street, you will most likely be able to hire someone who knows how to walk across the street. These are some of the basic ideas that social justice research questions can come from. There are more types of questions that most survey programs have, but these were the ones that I liked to use the most. That is why I chose to do these.
